Located on a sloping site with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean in the community of The Sea Ranch on the Sonoma County Coast, the Hines House was built for Don Carlos and Anne Hines who hired architect William Turnbull, Jr. of MLTW/Moore-Turnbull to design the house as a retreat for their family in 1967. Construction began in February, 1968, and it was completed by October of that year. The builder was Matthew D. Sylvia with Sylvia Construction. Building on his nomination of the Sea Ranch “Binker Barn” in 2018, a modern Shed Style home that was also completed in 1968 and designed by William Turnbull, Jr., Brewster Historic Preservation was hired to prepare the nomination of the Hines House to the National Register of Historic Places by its current owners. After an extensive research and survey effort, Brewster Historic Preservation recommended the Hines House to be eligible for the National Register at the local level of significance because it embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type of construction known as the Shed Style, and represents the work of California master architect William Turnbull, Jr., FAIA, when he was a founding partner with the architecture firm of MLTW/Moore-Turnbull. The property also represents the work of California master builder Matthew D. Sylvia, who constructed many buildings at The Sea Ranch throughout his career, and directly contributed to the early success of the community. The nomination process began in November 2020, and the Hines House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2021.
