The property at 3878 Jackson Street is a three-story-over-basement, single-family residence in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights neighborhood that was initially completed in 1906 in a Shingle Style or First Bay Tradition style of architecture, with substantial alterations in the 1990s, including a large third floor addition, which transformed the property into the appearance of an Edwardian-era row house with various faux Classical Revival style architectural elements. Similar to all other residences on the 3800 block of Jackson Street, the property is a contributor to the Presidio Heights Historic District, which is eligible for listing in California Register of Historical Resources for its architectural values. As the proposed project would substantially alter the exterior of the property with a new horizontal addition, Brewster Historic Preservation was hired by the homeowners to prepare the HRE report to assist the San Francisco Planning Department in determining the home’s individual historic significance and confirm its status as a contributor to the Presidio Heights Historic District. Brewster Historic Preservation recommended that the home did not meet the criteria for individual listing in the CRHR due to the extensive alteration in the 1990s, but would continue to be a contributor to the historic district due to its architectural compatibility with the other homes in the immediate area. Work on the HRE was begun in September 2022 and completed by October 2022.
